BECA Mision Statement
The BECA mission is to provide financial aid to local students with high aptitude for learning. These students may otherwise be unable to attend school due to financial constraints.
The BECA Committee is an all-volunteer organization with minimal administrative, event and organizational
costs. Generous donations of time, expertise and creativity help raise the much needed thousands of dollars annually used to support the educational goals of La Mision students.
BECA raises scholarship funds through several annual social events. In addition to their entertainment value, these events are designed to enlighten and encourage public support of the educational needs of the La Mision community.
EVENTS:
Cinco de Mayo: (Louise . . . Merrilyn is sending this section in a separate e-mail We should be able to forward additional pictures. Steve dutifully took a lot.)
Chili/Flan Off: Usually held in early March the Chili/Flan Off brings out the creative and competitive chef in many of us and the appreciative eater in all of us. Attendees bring a Chili or a Flan for the competition or an appetizer to be shared. Margaritas and beer are included with the price of admission.
Fandango: Our largest event of the year is held over the Labor Day Week-end. It features an art auction . . . art donated by many local artists, a raffle, a dinner and dance. In 2008 the event is scheduled for Sunday, August 31. Mark your calendar now.
Our students:
Students attending La Mision schools that meet the necessary criteria of excellent grades combined with verifiable financial need are eligible for consideration. BECA students must maintain high grades and show an intense desire to improve, advance and excel in education. The primary goal of the BECA Committee is to keep the best and brightest kids in school and offer extended educational opportunities to these future community leaders.
Annual scholarship assistance (USD) includes:
Primaria (grades 5-6) - $200
Secundaria (grades 7-9) - $200
Preparatoria (grades 10-12) - $600
Universidad - $600
How we choose: The BECA Committee reviews scholarship applications, award decisions and hardship cases. Report cards of scholarship recipients are reviewed bi-annually to insure that grade point averages and school attendance remain constant. LMPOA members are encouraged to attend BECA Committee meetings.
Each June, after final report cards are issued, the BECA Committee reviews applications for BECA scholarship funds. Applications are available through committee members and local schools.
How you can help: Become a member of the BECA Committee or donate cash, auction items, food and/or your time at one of the fund-raising events. Donation of unique items such as art, art objects, and raffle items, are always welcome for our three annual events.
Sponsor a child with a donation of any size . . . $200 keeps a child in Primaria or Secondaria for an entire school year and $600 keeps a child in Prepatoria or Universidad for a school year.
Or, if you like to think bigger, you might want to consider a Memorial Scholarship such as the Pat Gee Annual Universidad Beca, which awards a university student, chosen by the donor, with $1000 annually. The BECA Committee can help identify students that would qualify for your gift.
Attend our events, buy raffle ticket and art . . . you can beautify your world and make the world a better place at the same time.
